Security for your home is very important these days. You may have been broken into and are concerned that it may happen again, so what should you do? Statistics have proven that a would be burglar will try to gain access into your home by attacking the front entrance door. Additionally, they want to overcome the door as quickly as possible with the minimum amount of noise using relatively simple and portable tools.
Timber doors, although beautiful to look at, are simply not strong enough. The weakest point in a timber door set is the frame. By using a crowbar the door can be forced open at the lock side. PVC doors are easy to get through also by forcing the inner panel from the surround frame but this may involve an element of noise.
It may be possible to upgrade your existing door but for peace of mind a better solution is to remove your existing entrance door and
replace it with a steel door. Your immediate thought is probably grey, flat industrial looking doors that are usually associated with commercial shops, factories and the like. This type of door can be used but nowadays there is a complete range of steel based doors targeted to the domestic market.
A door manufactured from steel will consist of an inner steel frame overlaid with steel sheet all welded together to form the door leaf. The hollow core is usually filled with foam or mineral wool for added thermal efficiency reducing heat loss. If a higher level of security is required from the door then the core can be filled with solid wood. A steel frame to hang the door is provided to complete the door set.
To meet the domestic market demands there are now a number of finish options. Some doors are available with the outer face stamped with a wood grain effect which is quite convincing. This type usually requires painting and will be delivered primed ready for the final coats on site. If you want the security but prefer a wood finish some manufacturers offer steel doors overlaid with wood veneer that looks and feels like a wooden door but with the added security. These doors tend to be quite expensive.
Glazed panels can be incorporated comprising several layers of glass which is very tough to break.
Fitting these doors is relatively easy and similar to a standard door. You must however, ensure that the structural opening that will receive the door is structurally capable of withstanding the weight as these doors can be quite heavy, at about 50kg.
Therefore by
installing exterior steel doors there is a strong possibility that the would be burglar will give up before trying and leave your premises.
