There are several places you can go to try and find bargains when you need a new
cycling shirt. Here are five ideas to get you started on your search.
Local Sports Stores - Several of the larger sports stores will buy used
cycle clothing and equipment from people who upgrade to a better brand, or who outgrow their old gear. They then sell the clothing at a profit, but also at prices which can often be far cheaper than buying brand new. This is a good way of doing business as everybody wins; the original owner gets some money back instead of throwing away his kit, the shop makes a nice little profit, and you pick up a perfectly fine cycling shirt at a discount price.
Try Local Yard Sales - You might have to go to a lot of yard sales to find that perfect cycling jersey, but it will certainly be worth it if you can pick it up at a bargain basement price. Most yard sales take place at the weekends, but it is worth keeping your eyes open for listings in your local newspapers, and to pop along to as many as possible in your search for decent used cycling apparel.
Your Cycling Friends - If you have a bunch of buddies who you go cycling with, ask them if they have any old gear stashed in their closet somewhere which they don't use anymore. They will probably be happy to sell you an old cycling jersey rather than having it gather dust at home. Or if you are a member of cycling club or team, one of the other cyclists might have some old jerseys they don't need. Failing that, there are usually listings in cycling magazines for items for sale; have a look through those to see if anything fits the bill.
Craigslist and Ebay - The next place to consider going to find your dream cycling shirt is the online classifieds sites, for example Craigslist and Ebay. They'll normally be offering good quality wares, and you should aim to buy from local sellers if at all possible. This will enable you to avoid buying your shirt without having seen it first. Also, local merchants will understand any special requirements you might have. For example, you may need long sleeved cycle jerseys for riding in very cold conditions; since the seller also lives nearby, he'll know about the need for such apparel and will normally be able to provide exactly what you want.
The online vendors can provide some great deals if you do not find anything using the other routes described already. It does mean you will be buying your new cycling shirt brand new, rather than used, so expect to pay a little more for it. However, you are sure to get a shirt that ticks all the boxes if you do get a brand new one, which is sometimes worth the extra money you have to shell out. Just be careful to visit several online stores to ensure you don't pay more than you need to.
