With your first bundle of joy you were at liberty to shed the shirt and nurse whenever and wherever in your home. Now that you have a 4 year old staring and asking questions, are you comfortable baring it all to breastfeed your newborn?
Breastfeeding with older children present can make some moms feel uncomfortable. After all, your older child has not nursed in years. Other mothers have little to no reservations about showing older siblings exactly what is taking place. This is simply how the newborn eats.
Older child curiousity about breastfeeding is healthy and normal. Your toddler may even ask to try nursing. This decision is up to you, the mother. Though, if you do, most children will find the experience too strange to attempt more than once. Nursing can be a nice time to enjoy your older child while feeding the infant. They will want to talk to you about what is happening. They may even want to interact with the baby, as well. Singing is a good way for older children to feel as though they are helping with the baby, but without upsetting your feeding.
You may be comfortable with your older child seeing your naked breasts, especially if that child is a girl. For those who are not ok with this idea, invest in a stylish and functional
modesty nursing wrap. These wraps are also great for nursing in public areas, such as the park or restaurants.
You might think that you need a cover to keep your child from watching you nurse. Many mothers, however, feel surprisingly at ease nursing a new infant in front of their older child. It is a great way to include your son or daughter in the activities of your newborn. You might start out with a nursing cover until you familiarize yourself with nursing in front of your child. You might always want to have a blanket or cover. That is ok, too. Every mother is different. The key is to follow your own instincts. If you are uncomfortable, your newborn and child will be uneasy as well.
