How to Avoid Injury with Your Trampoline

A lot has been made lately of the dangers of trampolines.  Many thousands of people hurt themselves each year on trampolines usually by doing something stupid.  These devices can be very dangerous if used recklessly but are also a great way to relax, have fun and get some exercise.  So if you have a trampoline and you don’t want to make the same mistakes may others make then follow these guidelines and you won’t end up in the emergency room.

First, make sure you get some safety trampoline accessories.  If you have a large trampoline that is a few feet off the ground and possible hazards around it if you were to fall then you should be sure to purchase a trampoline cage that goes around the outside edge of the trampoline.  If you lose your balance or are about to fall off, this will catch you and keep you from hitting the ground.  Also you should have a high quality trampoline pad covering the springs of your trampoline.  That is the main injury causing area of the trampoline because it is easy to fall onto or into the springs which can then pinch or cut you.

If you have a square trampoline take your time to get used to it and feel it out before trying to jump to high.  These trampolines can be a little more unpredictable and require some experience.  You should take it slow and build your way up to high bouncing once you get confident that you are in complete control.

Follow the rules of the trampoline, especially that only one person should be on it at a time.  This is the easiest way to get hurt because you can land on each other or smash into each other in the air.  Also the other person landing could cause you to get and unpredictable bounce which in turn could cause you to fall off the trampoline.  Finally do not jump without someone else nearby.  If something happens and you are injured someone should be there to help you and call an ambulance if necessary.
