A Great Decorating Tool: Large Area Rugs

Rugs play a vital role when accessorizing any room.  Whether they will be used over a hardwood floor, tile, or even placed on top of carpeting, a large area rug will add a completely new dimension to the room.  Many different sizes are available and choosing the size that is right for the room is very important to get the best fit.  Rugs come many different materials, so finding the right rug means more than fitting the space it will accommodate, it must also fit the level of traffic and provide adequate durability for the space.  Another important consideration is the color, predominant colors and secondary colors can be used to coordinate with the rug.

The standard rule of thumb regarding size differs according to the room it will be used in, but a rug definitely needs to be big enough for whatever furniture is in the room.   The furniture needs to fit comfortably within the space of the rug with enough rug left to make it not seem forced.  For example, when putting a rug in a dining area, the rug needs to be big enough that all the chairs can be pulled away from the table and still have the legs on the rug, not hanging over onto the floor.  For this reason, large area rugs usually are very nice in a dining room.  The same is true in a bedroom, the rug must fit the space.  If the rug is to be placed under a bed, enough of the rug should be left on either side of the bed so that feet will not hit the cold floor, but will land comfortably on the rug when getting out of bed.

The durability of the rug will be an important consideration depending on where it is going to be used.  If the rug is placed in a bedroom or dining room, it will not need to handle the same amount of traffic and abuse as a kitchen or foyer rug.  When looking for a good durable rug for a kitchen, jute or sisal are always great choices.  These rugs are available in smaller sizes that will fit perfectly in front of a sink, or in a larger size that will fit nicely under a table.  Kitchen rugs not only get a lot more traffic, they also need to withstand all the spills and crumbs that are bound to end up on them.

Rugs provide a wonderful opportunity to bright a room, have fun and don’t be afraid to experiment.  A bright cheery rug is a great addition to a kitchen, while a nice red area rug can provide warmth and color to a living room.  Bathrooms are another room that can benefit from the bright color as it is perfect for brightening the small space.

Think of an area rug as a layering tool and keep space, color and durability in mind when choosing the perfect rug.  They are a great way to add dimension and warmth as well as style to whatever room you choose.
