The Causes and Treatment of Cellulite

Post-adolescent women have a ninety percent chance of getting cellulite. It is a problem that can affect any woman regardless of her age, weight, body shape and background – and it can strike at any time. It hardly ever occurs in men due to their low levels of the hormone estrogen and a different distribution in fat.

Essentially, cellulite is clumps of harden fat that is usually found on the hips, thighs and butt. The lumpy fat pushes against the upper layer of skin to cause the “cottage cheese” or “orange peel” look that characterizes cellulite.

Research has demonstrated that cellulite is mainly caused by genetics. In other words, if your mother had cellulite then you are more likely to get it yourself. Medications that effect the hormonal balance in a woman’s body is also a main culprit. Lifestyle habits such as a lack of exercise, fatty and salty foods, and alcohol can make the cellulite worse.

Beauty companies have been manufacturing a range of anti cellulite treatments for a number of years. There are creams, injections, lasers and surgery that can be used to get rid of cellulite. However, there is no silver bullet and most treatments beside surgery only hide the condition and do not completely remove those things that causes cellulite in the first place. Another problem with these cellulite removal treatments is there cost. Most can be very expensive with a session costing well over $70.

Probably the most effective cellulite reduction method is cream. It is convenient in that you can apply the cream at home and a bottle will cost as little as $10. There are more time consuming and costly treatments like machined-based massage and body wraps that are done in beauty clinics. While these remedies are typically more effective than cellulite cream, there cost and the time required puts them out of reach of most women.

A final option is to accept your cellulite and live with it. If you choose this option, it is possible to cover up much of the condition by using a fake tan or a creative use of clothing.
